Forbes had a great article on how to keep remote workers involved and productive. The full article can be ready here.

I would add that other than micro-managing people´s days one focuses on hiring those that are mature enough and structured enough to plan their days and weeks. One can be productive from anywhere as long as they are structured.

As more and more companies are offering remote work options there are more and more startups that utilize top talent from across the globe. Of late I have experienced a Fintech startup with employees from South and North America, Australia and New Zealand, and throughout Western and Eastern Europe. Some work remote, some work in the office. Using tools like Slack they can communicate, update status, update what has happened of late and more. Using video conferencing either Visiple, google hangouts or even Skype they are able to communicate how they wish, when they wish.
